Despite a valiant and balanced 213 page interim report from Kate Barker in July advising the government to avoid more major change to the planning system the government is still implementing reform at an alarming rate.
After 23rd August 2006 no planning department will be able to grant an extension to any existing planning consent or renew without full details/a new application being submitted. Many current consents could now be refused or curtailed in a changed political environment.
When you think of urban regeneration in the West Midlands you tend to think of developments like Brindleyplace and the Bullring; landmark schemes that have achieved national acclaim for their groundbreaking regeneration of England’s second city. However not all of Birmingham’s successful regeneration is being delivered by major developers and pension fund investors.
Schemes such as Baskerville House (197,150 sq ft) and Temple Point (65,000 sq ft) are due for completion this summer, and will certainly go some way to filling the much lamented gap in the supply chain in the short term.
