Former fire station sets Gloucester property market alight PDF Print E-mail
The search is on to find tenants for a characterful former fire station building in Gloucester city centre which has been converted into quality office accommodation.

The Old Fire Station is on the corner of Barbican Road and Longsmith Street and was a fully operational fire station until 1975 before it was converted into a transport museum by Gloucester City Council. It has since been extensively refurbished by its current owner and has been put on the market to let by property consultants Bruton Knowles. The rent is £11,500 per annum.

Situated on the ground floor of a three-storey end of terrace period building, the office accommodation has been refurbished to a high standard and comprises just over 900 sq ft (84 sq m) of office space, including a kitchenette. The property also benefits from two parking spaces and an outside store of just over 100 sq ft.

The owner of the Old Fire Station, Terry Ealey comments, “The fire station was built around 1912 and is one of the earliest examples of a reinforced concrete building. I bought the property at auction in May 2005 and carried out refurbishments which were finished just before Christmas 2006. The basic structure was in good condition for a building that was nearly 100 years old but extensive work was needed inside.

When it was first in use as an operational fire station, the doors at both the front and back of the property used to allow the fire engines to enter and exit. The front doors have been retained as original features but are now fixed in position so access is via an entrance courtyard at the rear. The generous amount of headroom on the ground floor means that the accommodation is very light and airy with an open plan layout; it offers lots of space and would make an ideal office for companies such as designers, architects or anyone in the creative industries.”

Katie Winter, surveyor from Bruton Knowles appraises the site, “This is the first time this historic and unique building has been available to rent as an office space. The quality and character of the accommodation, coupled with its excellent city centre location, makes this an extremely attractive offering. The Old Fire Station is situated less than 200 metres from the pedestrianised precinct of Southgate Street in the centre of Gloucester.  The city benefits from excellent transport links and the construction of the South West Bypass which is due to open in April will give improved access to junction 12 of the M5.”
