In anticipation of a rise in consumer complaints and demand for appeals, RICS has published a mandatory code of practice for chartered surveyors who support clients through the business rate appeals process.
James Bailey, partner at Bruton Knowles said that the guidelines bring additional clarity following revaluation.
“We welcome the publication of a new code of practice to help alleviate confusion around the appeals process,” said James.
“It will mean that our customers will be better protected and benefit from clearer contractual conditions and our chartered surveyors are better placed to support clients too.
“The new code of practice provides vital protection for many small firms considering using a surveyor to appeal a recent valuation. It will play a vital role in helping SMEs and small business, who are key to a growing economy, have the awareness they need before making significant decisions about an appeal process.
The code has been developed in RICS in collaboration with leading bodies in the profession.
