Superfast Broadband speeds are fast becoming must-have items for businesses looking to move or expand in the region.

One of the first things that people buying or letting commercial property in outlying locations in the South West generally ask us is whether it has fast broadband speed.

It is increasingly the case that they will not look at a property if it has not got sufficiently fast and reliable internet access. With an ever increasing reliance on technology in all business sectors, fast broadband speeds are as vital to rural businesses as they are to those in urban locations.

Many farmers are looking to diversify into tourism, commercial lets or retail units, for example, to increase the potential income from their farm.

We handle a range of businesses in the wider region – and it has become clear that both urban and rural landlords need to make sure they have the right connections for their buildings in order to appeal to the widest range of potential occupiers.

As the network continues to improve it will open up properties in locations which may not  have previously been viable.

Barn conversions incorporating home working facilities were one way farmers could help extend their income stream given an uncertain future – although branching out from livestock and arable farming into new business activities can be a daunting prospect.

Without adequate broadband speeds such new enterprises may struggle to attract occupiers who rely of fast and reliable data transfer speeds in order to function effectively.

As the fibre optic broadband reaches further into the South West, so too will the number of businesses looking for a suitable base of operations - and they don’t necessarily have to be located in traditional urban areas.

In the past they would have had to be near broadband hotspots where they could log on without any issues - but the rise in super-fast connectivity has allowed, in particular, tech-based firms the chance to make the most of competitive rates and a lifestyle for their staff many often dream of, not to mention easier commuting and reducing traffic congestion and pollution in urban areas.
